Moxibustion

Ancient warmth,
deep restoration.

The heat of burning Artemisia penetrates deeply into meridian pathways — warming cold conditions, nourishing Yang deficiency, and stimulating circulation at the root level.

Moxibustion uses the heat generated by burning Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) — either directly on acupuncture points or held above the skin — to penetrate warming energy into the meridian system. The herb has been used in this way for over two thousand years, prized for its ability to tonify Yang, warm the channels, and move stagnation that acupuncture alone cannot reach.

Moxa is particularly valuable for conditions that are chronic, cold in nature, or deficient at the root level. Where acupuncture moves and regulates Qi, moxa builds and warms — making the two modalities highly complementary. Many patients receive both in the same session.

The sensation of moxa is deeply warming and pleasant — many patients find it profoundly relaxing. It carries a distinctive woody, slightly smoky aroma that many find calming.

What it addresses
Yang deficiency — chronic cold sensations, fatigue, low metabolism
Digestive weakness — loose stools, poor appetite, slow digestion
Gynecological conditions — painful periods, cold uterus, fertility support
Breech position correction in late pregnancy (with OB oversight)
Post-partum recovery and Blood building
Arthritic pain aggravated by cold and damp weather
Immune deficiency and recurrent illness
Slow-healing injuries and post-surgical recovery
Common Questions
Is moxibustion safe during pregnancy?
Certain moxa protocols are specifically designed for pregnancy — most notably the famous protocol for turning breech babies (applied at Bladder 67). Outside of these specific applications, moxa during pregnancy should only be administered by a qualified practitioner who will select appropriate points.
What does it smell like?
Moxa has a warm, woody, slightly smoky aroma — some describe it as similar to sage or incense. We use high-quality processed moxa and maintain good ventilation in the treatment room.
How is it different from acupuncture?
Acupuncture moves and regulates Qi. Moxibustion builds, warms, and tonifies — it's especially powerful for cold, deficient, and chronic conditions that need more than movement; they need nourishment.
